Controlling any process begins with accurately measuring temperature. Measurement is crucial because you cannot effectively manage a parameter that you do not monitor. Consider this: how can you possibly exert control over something if you lack the means to measure it?

Transmission of the measured signal

The second part of controlling is Transmission of the measured signal. Transmission means sending the measured signal to an instrument. But what is the need of signal transmission? A temperature gauge shows its reading on the remote location means the place at which the temperature gauge is mounted. RTD and thermocouple do not show the readings at location where they are mounted.

Why do you need RTD and thermocouple when temperature gauge is showing the reading?

There may be two reasons associated with this:

Firstly, RTD and thermocouple readings are not shown at the place they are mounted. So, their readings are transmitted to any controller or indicator using wires or cables. The signals of RTD and thermocouple are transmitted to any controller or indicators. By controllers we control the temperature in industries, so RTD and thermocouple signal transmission is necessary.
Secondly, for controlling a parameter we need some feedback signals or input signals. RTD and thermocouple signals work as a feedback or input signals. So the signals are transmitted to a controller where the controller may be a PID Controller or PLC/DCS which are widely used in industries.

The signal transmission is done by two methods, the first method is direct method where the RTD and thermocouple are transmitted directly to any controller ( PID Controller or PLC/DCS ) or any indicator. The wire is connected directly according to the set point. The next method is using a temperature transmitter where the signal is first connected to a temperature transmitter.
