In a process plant it is often necessary to measure the pressure of liquid, gases and vapours whether in closed vessels or pipelines. This measured pressure should be then sent to PLC which is a distant control room which then uses this pressure value to control the process plant. Pressure gauges or pressure sensors may be used to measure pressure but they do not have the capability to transmit the measured pressure signal to a distance. So an instrument called a Pressure Transmitter is used for this purpose.

As the name indicates Pressure Transmitter is an instrument that is used for measuring the level of pressure which then gets converted to a proportional electrical output signal, this output signal is then transmitted back to a control signal. The input of the pressure transmitter is the pressured to be measured and the output signal is usually a voltage signal between 1 to 5 Volt or a current signal of 4 to 20 mill amperes which represent 0 to 100 percentage of the measured pressure.

Components of a Pressure Transmitter

A Pressure Transmitter is a device that is made up of three important components- a pressure sensor, a signal converter, and a Transmitter. A Pressure Transmitter first measures the pressure of liquid and gases through its pressure sensors which senses the sensors and converts it into an electrical quantity. The signal generated from the sensor is small and would not be useful if we sent at any distance. A signal converter plays a crucial role in transforming the sensor's output into an easily transmittable analogue voltage. Once this conversion is complete, the transmitter sends these signals to the appropriate receiver, where the readings are displayed for analysis.
