Ball Valves: Functions, Advantages & Disadvantages

What is a Ball Valve?

A ball valve is a mechanical device designed to regulate the flow of liquids or gases through the use of a rotating ball. This type of valve operates with a quarter turn, allowing it to be easily opened or closed by turning a handle or using a wrench.

Find here complete guide on a ball valve work, what are its main components, what are its advantages and disadvantages. By the end you will get a complete idea and you should get a feeling of where we can use the ball valve and who is the BALL VALVES SUPPLIERS IN UK.

Components of a Ball Valve

In a Ball Valve the body is slightly larger than the other parts because this is where the ball is housed and it is asymmetrical on the opposite side. But in order to fully understand the valve and how it works you need to seek the service of a BALL VALVES SUPPLIERS.

The ball valve gets its name from the type of disc it employs which is the ball. Most of the ball valve belongs to the 90 degree rotation valve family. The valve that turns of course would include Ball Valve, Plug Valve, and the Butterfly Valve. As with all quarter turn valves, they are quiet quick to operate. You can install a gear box at the top, a planetary type gearbox; although this means that you will slow down the actuation speed of the valve or what is referred to as the response time.

Advantages and Disadvantages

The disc is manufactured of a metal material like a stainless steel, as in the body itself. The seat is manufactured from a softer material and this is going to be perhaps Teflon or some sort of elastic material or a stiff rubbery type of material. This allows the user to press the disc in tight against the seat and we really get a good seal. You will notice on top of the ball valve the stem being connected to the ball valve in what looks to be a little ridge. The stem connects into the top or into the groove of the top of the ball and that is what allows rotating the ball and opening and closing the valve. Notice that the shape is rectangular which allows the user to apply a higher of torque without deforming the top of the ball valve.

We hope you have rough idea now that you can use this valve off for on off applications and not so much for high temperature applications and definitely not for throttling applications.
